WHAT IS THEYYAM?

Theyyam, an ancient art form with roots reaching back over eight centuries, stands as one of the most captivating ritualistic expressions in Northern Kerala, India. Enriched with myths and stories from the Kerala mythology, Theyyam performances are a profound display of the gods and celestial spirits. Dedicated performers uphold the purity of this art, preserving its ritualistic heritage with unwavering commitment.

The term "Theyyam" is believed to be derived from "Daivam," meaning god. Rooted in the belief that immortal spirits temporarily inhabit mortal bodies to perform a divine ritual dance, Theyyam is a mesmerizing spectacle. The performances come alive with elaborate facial make-up, enchanting headgear, unique costumes, and ornate ornaments. Staged in front of village shrines or within traditional Malabar households during special occasions, Theyyam showcases its diverse varieties in various temples of Malabar.
